FAMILIAR FACES: the art of portraiture
June 3 - August 3, 2006
Many artists continue the tradition of portraiture as a form of artistic practice and for some, it is the ultimate
challenge. For the viewer, it is a fascinating glimpse into the struggle of the artist to depict a particular
persons features, character, and uniqueness.

This exhibit shows the diversity within this tradition. Some artists stay within the tradition of portrait painting and
others give us a more contemporary look at a timeless art form.
Amy Guidry's paintings are beautifully rendered

portraits that use unconventional compositions to enhance our relationship with the subject. See her work at www.amyguidry.com.
D.G. DeMourelle's compelling images individually express humor, love, anxiety, and one bad attitude as well
as being really terrific paintings. Demo's studio is located in Breaux Bridge.
Imogene Dewey is a master watercolorist following a more direct, traditional approach and offers us
sweet pictures of her grandchildren. Imogene lives and works in Lake Charles. She is also
listed on our directory of artists on this website.
Jarvis Hebert's paintings of Johnny Depp as a pirate and "Lafitte the Pirate"
comment on popular culture and history. Jarvis' work can also be seen on our directory and at www.jarvishebert.com.
Cynthia Alleman's work captures moments in her subjects lives. Her still life work has the same
color and drama and can be seen in the artists' directory.
Gwen Voorhies makes paintings and drawings like the old masters. Her work is reminisent of early impressionism:
loose brush work, local color, and acute observation. See here portrait work at www.gwenvoorhies.com.
Kate Ferry's paintings range from large scale watercolors to tiny oil paintings that simultaneously
feel intimate and vast. Kate is a freelance designer and illustrator working in Lafayette.

ING IS BELIEVING
Featuring Shann Comeaux, Ernie Fournet, Gail Shelton, "Boogi" Hebert

Shann Comeaux's
fluid images depict female figures reading verses from the Bible in a series of paintings titled "Chillin with the Word". The women are in seductive poses and the overlapping of brush marks and bodies put them in a dream like state. Her work is expressive and reveals a joyful relationship with the scriptures and the act of painting itself.

Ernie Fournet
is a retired police officer with a Masters Degree in Fine Art from LSU and paints in a hyper realistic style. His large scale floral images describe a world in soft focus and saturated with beautiful color. His description of water in a series of paintings from Pass Christian is profoundly hypnotic.

Gail Shelton
is from Winnfield, LA and is exhibiting her series of clever, conceptual "Riddle Pics". These colored pencil drawings are masterfully rendered and thoughtfully conceived. They combine two images to create a word or phrase like "watch" and "dog" or "duck" and "tape". They are light hearted and meaningful.

"Boogi" Hebert
is the son of the late Earl Hebert and began to paint shortly after the passing of his father. He has allready created an impressive body of work inspired by the memories of watching his father live as an artist. Boogi's colors and decorated frames are influenced by the work of his dad, but the rawness and the primitive style of the work are all his own.
