When I was 11 years old my sister and I converted a small house in our backyard into an art studio/play room and I painted my first portrait, which was that of Dr. Martin Luther King. I laughingly say that the likeness is closer to that of Jesse Jackson than Dr. King. As a child of the 60’s I was deeply affected by the Civil Rights Movement and its impact on the lives of those around me. At the age of 16 I had the privilege of being mentored by Mary Moffett (the head of the Interior Design Department of Louisiana Tech). I spent a summer in her studio while she painted my portrait and I listened to the stories of her studies at the Sorbonne in Paris and the interesting people she met there whose portraits covered the walls of her studio. I studied painting briefly at Louisiana Tech University and eventually left college to search out my artistic dreams in Aspen, Colorado. Painting has always been a big part of my life and now with my own studio I can share my love of the arts with others by giving them opportunity to enter into the discovery process at the “Rosedoor” – a house established as a place for prayer and the worship arts. Painting is worship for me. It is one of the ways that I communicate with and express my love for Jesus Christ, the Founding Painter of Heaven and Earth.
